It was written by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, Jay Orpin and Max Martin.This hard rock song became the most successful Bon Jovi single, hitting no. 1 across many countries."It's My Life" charted at no. 3 in the United Kingdom, no. 5 in Australia and no. 13 in Canada. The song was also immensely popular in Germany, where Bon Jovi already had a huge fan base. It was credited with introducing the veteran band to an entirely new, younger audience.

Wayne Isham directed this music video. Will Estes, the American actor, as Tommy and Shiri Appleby, the American actress, as Gina are the 2 main characters. At the beginning, Tommy is watching a video of the concert on his computer. Gina calls and during the whole video, Tommy is running to the Bon Jovi concert to meet up with her. We see him running through the streets of Los Angeles trying to get there. He is getting chased by dogs, running a marathon, and posing for pictures and jacknifing a truck. The video was inspired by the movie Run Lola Run.
